Snowmass Tip of the Day #5

Two rescues of out-of-bounds skiers/boarders over the past weekend are a strong reminder that skiing the backcountry can be extremely dangerous. Before you exit the ski area boundaries on any of the Aspen/Snowmass ski areas, know what you are risking and consider the following:
Have fun and stay safe!
- DO NOT go through a backcountry access gate unless you have taken an avalanche awareness course.
- Only ski/board terrain you are familiar with, or go with someone who does know the area.
- Take the weather conditions into account. Getting caught in a white-out can leave you lost and disoriented in areas that are normally within eyesight of the ski area.
- Know the current avalanche conditions. Visit the Backcountry Avalanche Forecast for Aspen.
- At a minimum, when you leave a backcountry access gate, be wearing an avalanche beacon and a helmet. You should also be carrying probe poles and a shovel. Having extra food, water, and a way to start a fire might also be a good idea.
- NEVER enter areas on the ski mountains marked "CLOSED." They are closed for a reason. For example, last week a ski patroller on Aspen Highlands was caught in an avalanche (he survived without serious injury, thankfully) set off by two snowboarders who had ducked a rope and entered a closed area above where he was working.
- Always let someone know where you are going and what time you expect to return. (If you want to know why this is important, google "Aron Ralston.")
Have fun and stay safe!
